UTEP football earns 4 All-Conference selections
EL PASO, Texas -- The Conference-USA league office announced it's All-Conference teams Tuesday, and UTEP was well recognized on both the C-USA Second Team and the C-USA All-Freshmen Team.
Representing the Miners on the All-Conference Second Team were senior offensive lineman Derron Gatewood and senior defensive end Denzel Chukwukelu, while defensive end Praise Amaewhule and longsnapper Tanner Boston were selected to the All-Freshmen Team.
Gatewood, an Odessa native, started every game for the Miners after missing all of 2018 with injury. He was the starting center on a line that paved the way for 18 rushing touchdowns in 2019.
Chukwukelu also played in every game this season, and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (5.5) and registered 3.0 sacks. Chukwukelu, who is garnering NFL interest per Head Coach Dana Dimel, also totaled 23 tackles.
All-Freshman selection Amaewhule played in every game in his first full year with the Miners, making eight starts. The Katy native also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (5.5), sacks (3.0), and QB hurries (3).
Boston also saw action in every game for the Miners, snapping over 100 times on Special teams. He did not see one botched snap throughout the season.
Earning All-Conference Honorable Mention for UTEP were OL Bobby DeHaro, DB Michael Lewis, K Gavin Baechle, KR Duron Lowe, and PR Justin Garrett.
