LIVE Updates: Slow-moving storm Henri drenches East Coast
WESTERLY, Rhode Island — Tropical Storm Henri made landfall along the coast of Rhode Island near Westerly on Sunday as the slow-moving storm drenched the Northeast U.S. with heavy rain and winds as it began pummeling the New England coast.
Rains led to inland flooding in areas as far southwest as central New Jersey. About 100,000 customers were without power in the Northeast, primarily in Rhode Island, according to Poweroutage.US.
Henri, which weakened from a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday, had sustained winds of 60 mph when it made landfall about 12:15 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm is now a tropical depression, having weakened to 35 mph winds as of 8 p.m. Sunday, but still packs heavy rain as it is expected to stall near the New York-Connecticut border and turn back toward the Atlantic Ocean on Monday.
President Joe Biden approved emergency declarations for Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
