Monmouth poll shows tight race for Democratic nomination
Former Vice President Joe Biden, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders lead the race for the Democratic primary, according to a new national poll out Wednesday from Monmouth University.
The three candidates make up the top tier with 23% for Biden and Warren each and 20% for Sanders. South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has 9% support among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, followed by California Sen. Kamala Harris with 5%, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and businessman Andrew Yang with 3% each, and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar with 2% support. No other candidate receives above 1% in the poll.
The Monmouth University poll is the sixth poll conducted by live interviewers between October 17 and November 3 of the Democratic primary race, showing a slightly tighter contest than others.
Including Monmouth, a CNN Poll of Polls finds that Biden leads with 27%, Warren with 23%, Sanders with 18%, Buttigieg with 8%, Harris with 4%, Klobuchar with 3%, and Yang, Booker and Gabbard all at 2%.
The CNN Poll of Polls is an average of recent non-partisan polling among either registered Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents or registered voters who say they will participate in their state’s primary or caucus.
Biden is still perceived as the most likely candidate to beat President Donald Trump, according to the Monmouth poll, with 25% who say he definitely will win against Trump. He’s followed closely by Warren (20% say she will definitely win) and Sanders (19%).
Overall, 42% of registered voters reported that Trump should be reelected, which has held steady since September; 55% want someone else in office.
Warren and Biden each saw slight upticks n their favorability ratings among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters; more than three-quarters now hold a positive view of each of them (79% and 76% respectively). Sanders, Harris, and Buttigieg all dipped in those who have a favorable opinion of them.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from October 30 to November 3, 2019, with 908 adults in the United States. The results in this release are based on 835 registered voters and have a +/- 3.4 percentage point sampling margin of error. This release also includes results based on 345 voters who identify as Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party which have a margin of error of +/- 5.3 percentage points.
