Las Cruces city council to vote on various grants, one of which funds improvements to Las Cruces International Airport
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The Las Cruces city council will vote Monday on whether to accept various grants for projects throughout the city, including improvements to the Las Cruces International Airport (LRU).
An airport striping grant, funded by New Mexico Department of Transportation-Aviation, will give funding for required FAA striping and marking at LRU.
This funding of nearly $38,000, if accepted, will be a part of the 2023 fiscal year funding for the airport. According to the budget, the total amount for the year is nearly $174,000.
Other carryover projects for the airport include infrastructure improvements, which include runway upgrades and most notably, a new passenger terminal. Officials say they want to attract larger commercial airlines to the airport.
The airport recently started offering regular commercial passenger travel back in January, something it hadn't seen since 2006.
The intrastate flights currently take passengers to and from Albuquerque, and the airport has said in the past that they wish to expand to interstate travel in the future.
