‘If we can still keep the memory, that’s all that’s important’: Walmart makeshift memorial to be moved
EL PASO, Texas -- Three months after the deadly Walmart shooting on August 3, people continue to pay their respects at the makeshift memorial in front of the Cielo Vista Walmart.
Visitors like Yarenna Delgado who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico were visiting for the first time on Sunday.
“Hearing that this happened where I was born, it broke my heart,” Delgado said.
The office of City Representative Henry Rivera along with the Rotaty have been maintaining this site since the beginning, but with the Cielo Vista Walmart reopening November 14, the city is will start to move items soon to a temporarily memorial at Ponder Park.
Ponder Park will be the site of the temporary memorial until the city officials decide where their permanent memorial will be.
The city is working with victims families, giving them access to collect items at makeshift memorial.
Visitors like Ariana Rojas said she's just glad the items collected will be maintained with respect by the city.
"It doesn’t matter where its at," Rojas said. "As long as we can keep that respect for the people the have moved on, that's all that matters because I know it's more important for the families.”
“I think we should all continue to stay positive. You know, life goes on. If we can still keep the memory, that's all that's important," Rojas added.
