West El Paso man dies after car crashes beneath I-10 overpass
UPDATE #2, Oct. 4: El Paso police on Monday released the name of a motorist killed when his car crashed beneath an I-10 overpass during the weekend.
Authorities identified the victim as Jerry Mendoza, 60, of west El Paso; they said the cause of the deadly crash remained under investigation.
UPDATE #1, Oct. 3: Police said a 60-year-old west El Paso man died Sunday afternoon at the hospital from injuries he suffered after crashing his car under the I-10 overpass at Gateway East and Yarbrough earlier in the day.
Authorities didn't release the man's name, saying they were still trying to notify his family members.
Investigators wrote in a crash report that the cause had not yet been determined.
“The driver was traveling on Gateway East and had entered the turnaround lane. For unknown reasons, the driver did not follow the turnaround and continued straight. As a result, the driver crashed into a retaining wall for the interstate,” the police report said.
This was El Paso’s 52nd traffic death of the year, compared to 56 at this time a year ago.
ORIGINAL REPORT, Oct. 3: EL PASO, Texas -- A car crashed into a highway underpass Sunday morning in east El Paso, sending a motorist to the hospital with very serious injuries.
It occurred near Gateway Boulevard East and N. Yarbrough Drive beneath the Interstate 10 underpass.
The crash happened about 7:45 a.m., although traffic investigators remained on scene for much of the morning; there was no immediate word on a crash cause.
The vehicle driver was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in serious condition.
