El Paso community holds healing vigil to unite with Buffalo
EL PASO, Texas -- El Pasoans arrived at the County Healing Garden Memorial at Ascarate Park Sunday evening for a day of remembrance for the Buffalo community.
On May 14, a suspected gunman allegedly traveled hours to Buffalo and opened fire at a supermarket, killing ten people. Authorities say the attack was racially motivated.
The El Paso community knows the heartbreak perhaps better than any other: The mass shooting in Buffalo and the tragedy that occurred in El Paso on August 3rd have similarities that are troubling and obvious.
The vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. El Pasoans are invited to light a candle in the unity of healing through the shared experience.
It will be hosted by County Judge Ricardo Samaniego, who said he hoped the garden would be a testament to healing for communities dealing with unexpected tragedies.
"The memory of our own profound experience is sorrowfully awakened, but we also know that good superseded evil, and unity overcame overwhelming pain," said Samaniego. "I pray that our community can assist the community of Buffalo New York during their bereavement process."
