I got my inspiration for this book after I read Ray Sanchez's "The Good, The Bad, and The Funny of El Paso Sports History". I thought Ray did a great job relating the history of El Paso's sports history from the early years to the present; however, I thought there was one glaring omission in the book. I didn't see any stories about the rise of soccer in El Paso and the surrounding areas. Everyone knows that football is king in Texas but the sport of soccer has seen a remarkable growth in the United States and especially in cities like El Paso. I'm almost tempted to say that soccer is more popular in El Paso than football when you consider how popular and intense the rivalry between the Mexican National Team and the United States National Team has become.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) began awarding a state championship in soccer in the 1983-1984 season. El Paso high schools have performed well in the state tournament playoffs in almost every year of the 30 years since the UIL began to offer a championship in soccer. Coronado High School won the state championship in the 1995-1996 season. Del Valle High School won a state title in the 2004-2005 season and another in the 2007-2008 season. Hanks High School and Del Valle High School finished in second place in the 1992-1993 season and the 2012-2013 season, respectively. Riverside High School made the trip to the final 4 in the 2010-2011 season as did El Paso High School in the 1987-1988 season and again in the 2009-2010 season. Del Valle High School has a couple final four 4 finishes in the 2003-2004 season and again in the 1998-1999 season. The Franklin High School girls finished in the final 4 during the 1995-1996 season.
The Texas UIL website, uiltexas.org, has been my resource for my research into El Paso high school playoff finishes in soccer unless otherwise noted. Some of the UIL records are incomplete with only final 4 or final 2 records listed. Only one state championship was awarded prior to the 1998-1999 season as an All Schools competition was held. Most schools in El Paso competed in 5A until the UIL started a 4A level in the 1999-2000 season.
San Elizario High School wins 4A Boys State Soccer Title
San Elizario High School completed its historic run in the state playoffs on April 17 th , 2015 by winning the UIL 4A Soccer State Championship by defeating Liberty Hill High School 4-2. The Eagles used a strong offense and an even stronger defense during the playoff run. San Elizario scored a total of 24 goals while only surrendering 5 goals during the five game march to the state title. San Elizario's Edwin Marquez scored a goal in the 21 st minute of the match to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth one scored by Marquez in last two games. Liberty Hill tied the match at 1-1 in the 39 th minute only to see San Elizario regain the lead 38 seconds later when Abraham Escareno was able to score a goal. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the half time break. Francisco Ruiz would score what would end up being the winning goal in the second half giving San Elizario a 3-1 lead. Both teams scored goals in the final minutes of the game after having to wait out a 30 minute lightening delay. The Eagles didn't mind as they won the state championship trophy with a final score of 4-2. Marcos Utajara, Abraham Escareno, Edwin Marquez, and Francisco Ruiz were named to the 4A All-Tournament team and Ruiz was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Game. El Paso area high schools have always performed well in UIL Soccer playoffs and 2015 has be no exception. The following is a recap of the playoff performances for all the El Paso area high school soccer teams:
4A Boys Bi-District- San Elizario High School had a bye to the Area round.
5A Boys Bi-District- Bel Air High School defeated Canutillo High School 2-0; Horizon High School defeated Bowie High School 3-2; Del Valle High School defeated Irvin High School 3-1; and Eastlake High School defeated Andress High School 1-0
5A Girls Bi-District- Jefferson High School defeated Del Valle High School 2-1 in overtime; Eastlake High School defeated El Paso High School 2-1; Andress High School defeated Bel Air High School 3-1; and Chapin High School defeated Hanks High School 5-0
6A Boys Bi-District- Eastwood High School defeated Frenship High School 3-1; Socorro High School defeated Amarillo Tascosa 2-0; Franklin High School defeated Lubbock Monterey 3-0; and Amarillo High School defeated Montwood High School 3-2

El Paso area high schools did exceptionally well in the Area round of the playoffs with 9 local teams advancing to the Regional Quarter Finals.
4A Boys Area Round- San Elizario High School defeated Brownwood High School 6-1
5A Boys Area Round- The four teams from the El Paso area swept their competition in the Area Round with Del Valle beating Canyon 3-1; Bel Air defeating Caprock 4-0; Eastlake routing Lubbock 6-1; and Horizon easily defeating Amarillo Palo Duro 4-0
5A Girls Area Round- The 5A girls also performed well in the Area Round with three of the four teams winning to advance to the Regional Quarter Finals. Eastlake defeated Caprock 4-2; Chapin beat Lubbock 1-0; Andress defeated Randall 3-1; and Jefferson lost to Abilene Cooper 2-0
6A Boys Area Round- Only one of the El Paso area 6A teams advanced to the Regional Quarter Finals. Eastwood defeated Midland 3-1; Franklin High School battled Arlington Martin to a 1-1 deadlock in regulation before losing 6-5 in a shootout; and Socorro was defeated by Sam Houston 2-0
6A Girls Area Round- Fort Worth Paschal High School eliminated Socorro High School 2-0. The El Paso area will not have a representative in the 6A Girls Regional Quarter Finals.
There was both good and bad news for El Paso area teams in the Regional Quarter Finals. The good news was that two of the boy's games featured match-ups between El Paso teams as did one of the girl's games thus insuring that El Paso would have three representatives in the Regional Semi-Finals. The bad news, of course, was that 3 El Paso teams would be eliminated from the playoffs.
4A Boys Regional Quarter Finals-San Elizario High School continued their march in the playoffs defeating Stephenville 3-0. San Elizario has now score 9 goals in their two playoff games while only giving up 1 goal to the opposition.
5A Boys Regional Quarter Finals- Bel Air High School advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals by defeating Eastlake High School 3-2 while Horizon High School edged Del Valle High School 2-1 to earn their spot in the semis.
5A Girls Regional Quarter Finals- Andress High School advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals by defeating Chapin High School 1-0 while Abilene Cooper eliminated the other El Paso area representative, Eastlake High School, by a score of 4-0.
6A Boys Regional Quarter Finals- Eastwood High School was the El Paso area's lone representative in the 6A playoffs. Unfortunately, the Trooper fell to Arlington Sam Houston 3-0. El Paso will not have a boy's or girls' team in Class 6A Regional Semi-Finals.
Bel Air High School and Horizon High School do not play each other in the next round. El Paso could have two representatives in the Regional Finals if both teams are victorious in the Regional Semi-Finals. This would guarantee an El Paso area team would be making a trip to the Final 4.
4A Boys- San Elizario High School continued to shine in the Regional Semi-Finals and the Regional Finals. San Elizario defeated Gainsville 3-0 in the Semis and then beat Oak Cliff 3-1 in the Regional Finals. The Eagles have now scored 15 goals while only allowing 2 goals. Next up for San Elizario is a match-up against Kilgore in semi-finals of the 4A State Final 4.
The 5A Boys Regional Semi-Finals were kind to Horizon High School and Bel Air High School. Horizon defeated Northside 1-0 while the Highlanders beat Denton 2-0. The results of the Regional Semi-Finals meant that Horizon and Bel Air would square off against each other in the Regional Finals and also guaranteed that an El Paso area team would have a spot in the 5A Final 4.
Horizon and Bel Air played a classic match in the Regional Finals. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Soccer settles its' playoff ties by penalty kicks which in this writer's opinion is a horrible way to decide a playoff game. It's similar to the way football use to settle its' ties by penetrations. I would much rather have the games decided on the field with full teams participating. However, that was not the case with Bel Air and Horizon. Horizon outscored Bel Air 5-4 in penalty kicks and earned a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Highlanders. Next up for the Scorpions is a 5A Final 4 Semi-Final match-up against Georgetown East View.
5A Girls Regional Semi-Finals- The girls of Andress High School were defeated by Birdville 3-1 in the Regional Semi-Finals bringing an end to their great season.
4A Boys State Semi-Finals- San Elizario magical season continued on Wednesday, April 15 th . Edwin Marquez scored 3 goals to pace his Eagle team mates to a 5-1 victory over Kilgore High School. The Eagles have now scored an amazing 20 goals while only giving up three. San Elizario will now play Liberty Hill for the 4A Boys UIL Soccer State Championship.
5A Boys State Semi-Finals- Horizon High School faced a very tough battle trying to reach the final game of the UIL 5A Soccer State Championship. The Scorpions were facing an unbeaten Georgetown East View squad and they were playing them in Georgetown, Texas. East View was not given a home field advantage for being unbeaten. The Final Four was scheduled to be held in Georgetown several years ago. I doubt if the location of the match had much to do with the outcome as Georgetown took a commanding 3-0 lead over Horizon at half time and held on in the second half for a 4-2 victory and a place in the 5A title game. Horizon made an amazing run in the playoffs and finished their season with an 18-9 record. The players and coaches have made memories that will last a life time and have also made the El Paso area proud.
4A Boys State Championship-San Elizario defeated Liberty Hill 4-2 to capture the 4A Boys Soccer State Championship. See story above.
The State Champions
1995-1996 Coronado High School: The Thunderbirds, coached by Victor Vargas, may well have been one of the best, if not the best, high school soccer teams to ever compete for a state championship. The T-Birds dominated their competition once the playoffs started. Their closest matches came in a 2-0 victory over Arlington Martin in the regional semi-finals and a 3-2 victory over Plano High School in the state finals. Coronado only gave up 3 goals in their playoff run while scoring 36 goals. The Thunderbirds defeated all comers as the UIL only gave one state championship title in the 1996 All Schools Division. Several more years would pass before titles would be awarded based on size of schools for 4A and 5A titles. Coronado's matches to the state title are listed below:
Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Amarillo Caprock 8-0; Sectional: defeated Amarillo 7-1; Regional Quarter Final: defeated Wichita Falls Rider 5-0; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Arlington Martin 2-0; Regional Final: defeated El Paso Hanks 6-0; State Semi-Final: defeated Klein Oak 5-0; State Final: defeated Plano 3-2 for the state title.

2004-2005 Del Valle High School: Coach Bruce Reichman has built Del Valle into a soccer dynasty. His teams have compiled a 524-148-10 record going into the 2014 season. Reichman's teams have won two Texas State Championships, have been in four state final fours, and have won 15 district titles. Reichman was named the 2008 National Federation of High School Coaches State Coach of the Year and the UIL Coach of the Year. He has also been named Coach of the Year six times by the El Paso Times. Coach Reichman ranks highly among the nation's soccer coaches for all time wins and is currently tied for first place among Texas soccer coaches. Coach Reichman was inducted into the El Paso Sports Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 in recognition of his contributions to El Paso's youth and his outstanding achievements as a coach (teacher). The 2004-2005 Conquistador team would win the school's first state title in soccer. Del Valle was 23-4 on the year and their playoff victories were as follows:
Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Canyon Randall 3-0; Regional Quarter Final: defeated Jefferson High School (El Paso) 2-1; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Justin Northwest 2-1; Regional Final: defeated Denton 1-0; State Semi-Final: defeated Mission Veterans Memorial 1-0; and State Final: defeated Aledo 3-2 to win the Texas 4A State Championship. The UIL website didn't list any team members or All-Tournament selections.
2007-2008 Del Valle High School: The Conquistadors of 2008 would compile a 25-3-3 record and win their second state title in four years. Del Valle's playoff route included the following matches:
Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Denison 5-0; Quarter Finals: defeated Wichita Falls Rider 3-1; Regional Semi-Finals: defeated Abilene Wylie 5-1; Regional Finals: defeated Canutillo 1-0; State Semi Final: defeated Cedar Park Vista Ridge 1-0 in overtime; and State Final: defeated Brenham 3-2 for the 4A Texas State Championship.
Omar Jimenez, Nasser Abraham, Edgar Salcido, and Irvin Mendez were named to the All-Tournament Team with Jimenez being named Most Valuable Player.
The Teams That Finished 2 nd in the State Tournament
1992-1993 Hanks High School: The Knights reached the Texas State Final game in the All Schools Division and played the following matches:
Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Amarillo Caprock 8-0; Regional Qualifier: defeated El Paso High 4-1; Regional Quarter Final: defeated Midland 4-1; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Flower Mound Marcus 2-1; Regional Final: defeated Lewisville 3-2; State Semi-Final: defeated New Braunfels 2-1; and State Finals: Lost to Plano High School 3-1.
2012-2013 Del Valle High School: The Conquistadors reached the Texas State Final in the 4A Classification. Del Valle finished another great season with a 23-6 record and their only loss in the playoffs came in the State Championship match to an unbeaten Waco University that finished the season with a 31-0 record. Del Valle's playoff matches included: Bi-district: defeated Clint Horizon 4-1; Area: defeated El Paso Bowie 2-1; Sectional: defeated El Paso Eastlake 2-0; Regional Quarter Final: defeated Amarillo Palo Duro 3-1; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Birdville 2-0; Regional Final: defeated Wichita Falls Rider 4-2; State Semi-Final: defeated Pharr Valley View 1-0; and State Final: Lost to Waco University 1-0. The Conquistadors outscored their playoff opponents by scores of 18-6 goals.
The Teams That Finished in the Final Four
Four teams have made the trip to Austin, Texas to compete for the Texas State Championship in soccer but came up short in the state semi-final game. Those four teams are Riverside High School in 2010-2011, El Paso High School in 1987-1988, Del Valle High School in 1998-1999, and El Paso High School again in 2009-2010.
2010-2011 Riverside High School: The Rangers finished the season with a 17-8-3 record. They were defeated in the State 4A Semi-Finals by Kilgore High School (19-3-2) by a score of 2-1. Boerne (27-3-1) High School beat Kilgore 2-1 to win the state title. Riverside had the following playoff victories on their road to the final four: Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Austin High School 1-0; Sectionals: defeated Bowie High School 2-1; Regional Quarter Final: defeated Amarillo Palo Duro 5-0; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Argyle 1-0; Regional Final: defeated Ysleta High School 2-1; State Semi-Final: lost to Kilgore 2-1. Gabriel Pacheco and Osvaldo Chavez were named to the State All-Tournament Team.
2009-2010 El Paso High School: The Tigers made a return trip to the Final 4 to compete for the 4A Texas State Championship. El Paso High had high hopes of bringing home a title but fell to Humble Kingwood 5-2 in the State Semi-Final match. Frisco Wakeland would defeat Humble Kingwood 2-0 to capture the state title. El Paso High's matches leading to Austin, Texas were Bi-district: bye; Area: defeated Del Valle 5-1; Sectionals: defeated San Elizario 1-0; Regional Quarter Finals: defeated Amarillo Palo Duro 2-0; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Parkland 4-1; Regional Final: defeated Legacy 1-0; and State Semi-Final: lost to Humble Kingwood 5-2.
1998-1999 Del Valle High School: The Conquistadors made the trip to Austin, Texas to compete for the 5A Texas State Championship trophy. Del Valle would later be re-classified to 4A because of student enrollment guidelines. Humble Kingwood was once again the villain in the State Semi-Finals stopping the Conquistadors 4-0. Before that loss, Del Valle defeated the following teams: Bi-district: Franklin High School 6-0; Area: Amarillo 4-3; Quarter-final: Midland Lee 2-1; Regional Semi-final: Mansfield 4-1; Regional final: San Angelo Central: 3-1; and State Semi-final: lost to Humble Kingwood 4-0. Humble Kingwood would lose to Klein 3-1 in the state title matchup.
1987-1988 El Paso High School: The UIL webpage does not list the Tiger's matches that led up to their trip to the Final 4 to compete for the All Schools State Championship. Every high school in Texas competed in the same division for one state title. El Paso High lost to Richardson Pearce 2-1 in the state semi-final matchup. Klein would defeat Richardson Pearce 3-1 to win the state championship.
Teams That Finished in the Final 8
Teams from El Paso have always done well in the in the annual playoff hunt for the Texas State Championship in soccer. I found 14 teams, not counting the ones listed previously, that have finished in the elite 8 of the playoffs. Del Valle has been the most consistent team finishing in the final 8 four times. Canutillo High School and Bel Air High Schoool have done it twice and El Paso High, Hanks High School, Jefferson High School, Bowie High School, Ysleta High School, and Austin High School have all finished in the final eight teams once. To save time and space, I will just list each of these teams and their playoff runs. The UIL website only shows records for final 4 teams in the years from 1983-1984 to 1988-1989.
1989-1990 El Paso High School: defeated Del Valle 4-1; defeated Wichita Falls Rider 3-0; defeated Fort Worth Southwest 2-0; lost to Grapevine 4-0 in Regional Final
1991-1992 Del Valle High School: defeated Coronado 1-0; defeated Wichita Falls Rider 2-1; defeated Denton 4-0; lost to Grapevine 2-1 in Regional Final

Teams That Have Finished in the Final 16
It is fairly safe to say that an El Paso team has always finished in the final 16 teams of the state playoffs if they didn't advance deeper in the tournament. I don't have any records for the early years of the tournament because the UIL website only list the teams that finished in the final 4 for the years up to the 1988-1989 season. My research shows that there are 27 teams that reached the final 16 before they were defeated. This doesn't count the teams that advanced to the next rounds of the tournament. Here is a list of those teams. Again, I don't know about any teams that might have reached this level before the 1989-1990 season.

2018 Soccer update
San Elizario Wins Class 4A State Championship
El Paso area teams have always excelled in the soccer state playoffs. Cathedral, Coronado, Del Valle, and San Elizario have all won state championships in the past. San Elizario, under the leadership of Coach Max Sappenfield, won the UIL 4A title two years ago and the Eagles repeated the feat in 2018. Yes, San Elizario is once again the 4A state champions.
The Eagles finished the season with a 22-5 record including 6 straight playoff wins where San Elizario played smothering defense not allowing a single goal and scoring 15 themselves. The Eagles started the playoffs by beating Hirschi 4-0 in the Area round following a bye in the Bi-District stage. San Elizario then defeated Decatur 5-0 in the Quarter Finals and Life Oak Cliff 2-0 in the Regional Semi-Finals. Eric Valdez scored the winning goal in double overtime to give San Elizario a 1-0 victory over Bridgeport in the Regional Finals. The Eagles then defeated Madisonville 2-0 in the State Semi Finals setting up their title match against Palestine. Palestine came into the match as defending state champions with a 35-0 record. Martin Rodriguez scored the winning goal to give the Eagles a thrilling 1-0 victory and their second 4A state championship in the last three years. Congratulations to Coach Sappenfield and the Eagles.

On a side note: Two El Paso area teams were eliminated from the playoffs on penalty kicks. Montwood and Del Valle were both defeated by this archaic method of deciding soccer matches. I know that penalty kicks are part of the game that decide matches after overtime has been played but it is unfair to put all the pressure on the goal keeper to stop a penalty kick. It is a 50-50 chance to stop the kick and it ends up making the goal keeper the scape goat for losing a match. Please decide the game on the field no matter how many overtimes that it takes to reach a decision.

2017 Soccer Update
The El Paso area schools usually do very well in the various state soccer championships and that was also the case in 2017. There were no state titles but several schools went deep into the playoffs in both girls' and boy soccer. Del Valle and San Elizario both made it to the Regional Finals in boys' soccer while the Andress girls made it to Regional Semi-Finals after being given new life when El Paso High had to forfeit its' Regional Quarter Finals match after defeating Andress in that match.
6A Boys' Soccer
Montwood, Socorro, Coronado, and Franklin were the top teams in District 1-6A. All four teams won their Bi-District matchups. Montwood defeated Tascosa in a shootout 7-3 after going scoreless in the first two halves; Socorro beat Odessa 6-0; Coronado outlasted Midland 2-1; and Franklin ousted Midland Lee 2-1.
Area round action saw Socorro lose to Arlington Sam Houston 3-0; Coronado defeated Arlington Lamar in a shootout 5-4 after being tied 1-1 in regulation play; Franklin defeated Fort Worth Paschal 4-1; and Montwood lost to Arlington Bowie 2-0. Coronado and Franklin would see their seasons end in the Regional Quarter Finals. Coronado dropped its' match to Arlington Sam Houston 3-0 and Franklin was defeated by Arlington Bowie 2-1.
6A Girls' Soccer
The top teams in District 1-6A were Franklin, Socorro, El Dorado, and Eastwood. Franklin beat Odessa Permian 4-2 in a shootout after going scoreless in regulation play. Socorro lost to Odessa 3-1; El Dorado was defeated by Midland 1-0; and Eastwood lost to Frenship 5-0.
Franklin was the only El Paso area team to advance to the Area stage of the playoffs. The Lady Cougars defeated Arlington Martin 2-0 and moved on to the Regional Quarter Finals. Unfortunately, Frenship defeated Franklin 1-0 and ended the Cougar's season.
5A Boys' Soccer
District 1-5A was dominated by Andress, El Paso High, Irvin, and Austin. District 2-5A's top teams were Bel Air, Del Valle, Eastlake, and Horizon. El Paso High defeated Eastlake 6-1 in its' Bi-District match while other winners were Del Valle over Irvin 5-1; Bel Air over Austin 3-0; and Andress defeated Horizon 2-1.
The El Paso 5A contingent did well in the Area round of the playoffs with only Andress dropping iit' match to Dumas 2-1. Bel Air beat Caprock 4-2; EPHS defeated Palo Duro 1-0; and Del Valle ousted Amarillo 4-1.
Bel Air and Del Valle won their Regional Quarter Final matchups and advanced to the Regional Semi- Finals. Bel Air beat Dumas 5-0 and Del Valle eliminated El Paso High 2-0.
Bel Air would see their season end in the Regional Semi-Finals. The Highlanders lost to Wichita Falls in a tough match 3-2 in a shootout after the two teams finished regulation play tied 1-1. Del Valle continued its' winning ways by defeating Fort Worth South Hills 2-0.
Wichita Falls would eliminate its' second El Paso area team in the state Regional Finals when they defeated Del Valle 1-0 in another hard fought match.
5A Girls' Soccer
El Paso High, Burges, Chapin, and Andress were the top teams in District 1-5A while District 2-5A was dominated by Bel Air, Del Valle, Canutillo, and Eastlake. Bi-District action saw Burges beat Canutillo 2-1; Chapin beat Del Valle 3-0; Andress defeated Bel Air 3-2; and EPHS ousted Eastlake 4-0.
Area round play saw Chapin lose to Lubbock Cooper 3-2 in a shootout after both teams finshed regulation scoreless. Monterey eliminated Burges 5-1; Andress defeated Amarillo 4-1; and EPHS beat Randall 3-0.
Strange things happened in the Regional Quarter Finals. El Paso High defeated Andress 5-1 but had to forfeit for using an ineligible player thus giving the Eagles a new lease on playoff life.
Andress would see their season come to an end in the Regional Semi Finals when they were defeated by Aledo 2-0.
4A Boys' Soccer
San Elizario has been the state power in 4A soccer the last few years. San Elizario had a bye in the Bi-District stage of the playoffs. Other 4A area representatives were Clint and Mountain View. Clint lost its Bi-District match to Estacado 1-0 and Mountain View dropped its' match to Borger 5-2.
San Elizario continued its' winning ways in the Area stage by defeating Wichita Falls Hirschi 4-0. San Elizario would win its' Regional Quarter Finals match over Decatur 2-0 and beat Argyle 2-0 in the Regional Semi Finals. I'm sure that San Elizario was seeing another state title but such was not to be. Bridge Port eliminated San Elizario 2-1 in the Regional Finals.
4A Girls' Soccer
San Elizario, Clint, and Mountain View were the area's 4A representatives in girls' soccer. San Elizario had a bye in the Bi-District round while Clint defeated Estacado 2-1 and Mountain View lost to Pampa 7-1. Both teams would lose in the Area round. Clint was defeated by Wylie 14-0 and San Elizario lost to Stephenville 5-0.
TAPPS Soccer
TAPPS has two state championships in soccer, one in the fall and the other in the winter. I didn't see any results for Cathedral for the fall championships but the Irish did beat Dallas Bishop Dunne 5-4 in a Bi-District Division I match before losing to Plano Prestwood 1-0 in their Regional match.
El Paso Lydia Patterson Institute defeated San Antonio Christian 1-0 in a Division 2 Bi-District match before dropping an Area round match to Houston Lutheran 2-1.
2016 Soccer Update

EPHS and Jefferson girls make the Final 16
The El Paso area has always had a strong representation in the UIL Soccer State Championship playoffs with Coronado, Del Valle, and San Elizario all winning state championships in the past. This year would be no exception. Boys' soccer would see Socorro and El Dorado reach the 6A Regional Semi-Finals while Bel Air and Eastlake proved to be powerhouses in boys' 5A soccer. The Highlanders would reach the Regional Sem-Finals while Eastlake would make it all the way to the Final 4. Eastlake is quickly becoming one of the El Paso area's best athletic programs in all sports.
San Elizario, last year's 4A state champion, was again very good but were upset by Wylie in the Area stage of the playoffs. The girls also shined in 2016. Franklin made it to the Regional Quarter-Finals before losing to Odessa Permian.
El Paso High and Jefferson High had almost identical district records and both reached the Regional Semi-Finals. EPHS would fall to Wichita Falls Rider and the Foxes fell to Grapevine. The San Elizario girls was the top 4A area team but fell to Wylie in the Area round of the playoffs. The following is a breakdown of the district representatives for the various state classifications:
6A Boys: Montwood, Eastwood, Socorro, and El Dorado were the El Paso area's 6A playoff contenders. Bi-diistrict action saw Eastwood beat Tascosa 8-0, Socorro defeated Frenship 2-1, El Dorado and Amarillo were dead locked at 3-3 through two overtimes before the Aztecs won in a shootout 6-5, and Montwood topped Lubbock Coronado 3-1. Eastwood and Montwood would fall in the Area round while Socorro and El Dorado would continue their playoff runs. Eastwood lost to North Crowley 1-0 and Montwood was defeated by Sam Houston 3-0. Socorro beat Midland in a shootout after finishing regulation tied at 4-4. El Dorado defeated Fort Worth Paschal 1-0 to move on to the Regional Quarter Finals. Socorro and El Dorado were both victorious in the Regional Quarter Finals with the Bull Dogs beating North Crowley 1-0 and El Dorado defeating Sam Houston in a shootout 5-4 after finishing regulation tied at 1-1. The playoff runs of both schools would end at the Regional Semi-Final round of the playoffs. Socorro lost to eventual state champion Coppell 3-0 while El Dorado played Plano East to a 3-3 tie before falling in a shootout 2-0.
5A Boys: Jefferson, EPHS, Austin, and Canutillo were the 1-5A playoff representatives while Eastlake, Del Valle, Bel Air, and Hanks took the top 4 spots in 2-5A. Bi-district action saw Bel Air beat EPHS 4-3, Austin defeated Del Valle 1-0, Eastlake topped Canutillo 2-1, and Jefferson better Hanks 4-0. The 5A representatives continued their domination in the Area round with only Austin losing to Caprock 2-1. Bel Air defeated Randall 4-1, Eastlake beat Palo Duro 3-0, and Jefferson outlasted Lubbock 2-0. Bel Air beat Caprock 4-1 in the Regional Quarter Final while Eastlake ousted Jefferson 3-1 to continue their playoff run. Bel Air's great season would end with a 3-0 loss to Wichita Falls Rider in the Regional Semi Finals but Eastlake continued its' playoff run with a 4-1 victory over Grapevine. Eastlake great season would continue with a Regional Final's victory over Rider 5-4. The Falcons were on to the Final 4. Eastlake is a young program but already has proved to be one of El Paso's if not one of the best in the state of Texas. The Falcon's entered the State Semi Finals with a 22-2-1 record while their opponent, Brownsville Porter has a sparkling 26-0-1 record. Eastlake would battle it out to the very end but fell to the eventual state champion Porter squad.
4A: San Elizario was the 4A state champion last year and high hopes of defending that title. The Eagles had a bye in the bye district and were upset by Wylie 1-0 in the Area round of the playoffs. It is very hard to win a state championship much less to try to defend one's state title.
6A Girls' Soccer: Franklin, El Dorado, Coronado and Socorro were the El Paso area's 6A representatives in the girls' state tournament. Bi-district action would see Franklin beat Tascosa 6-0, El Dorado top Amarillo 2-1, Socorro beat Monterey 3-0, while Coronado lost to Frenship 3-1. Franklin would be the only area team to win in the Area round. The Cougars defeated Arlington Lamar with a 4-3 shootout victory after being tied 1-1 in regulation. Arlington Martin defeated El Dorado 1-0 and Socorro fell to Odessa Permian 1-0. Franklin's season would end the following week the Regional Quarter Finals. Shootouts had been kind to the Cougars the week before but not against Permian. The two teams would finish regulation tied at 1-1 before Permian won the match with a 4-3 shootout victory.
5A Girls' Soccer: Jefferson, El Paso High, Chapin, and Canutillo would represent district 1-5A in the playoffs while Eastlake, Bel Air, Del Valle, and Hanks were the district 2-5A contenders. Bi-district action saw Jefferson beat Hanks 2-0, EPHS defeated Del Valle 5-0, Bel Air topped Chapin 2-1, and Canutillo ousted Eastlake 2-0. El Paso High and Jefferson had the best girls' soccer teams in 5A and had almost identical season beating each other during the season. Both would continue their playoff runs with Area round victories with the Tigers beating Lubbock 4-3 and the Foxes defeating Abilene Cooper 2-0. Bel Air lost to Caprock 2-1 and Canutillo was defeated by Randall 2-1 in the Area round. The Tigers and Foxes would both be victorious the next week in the Regional Quarter Finals. El Paso High defeated Caprock 2-0 and Jefferson beat Randall in a 6-5 shootout after finishing regulation tied at 0-0. The great seasons of EPHS and Jefferson would come to an end in the Regional Semi Finals. The Tigers lost to Wichita Falls Rider 2-1 and Jefferson lost to Grapevine 3-0. El Paso High finished the season with a 23-2; 15-1 record and Jefferson finished with a 22-4; 16-1 record. Both schools reached the Final 16 stage of the 5A playoffs. The future looks bright for both teams as both squads have quite a few under classmen.
4A Girls' Soccer: San Elizario was the area's representative in the 4A playoffs. The Eagles had a bye in the Bi-district stage but would lose to Wylie 1-0 in the Area round.
2014 Boys Soccer Update
El Paso area high school boys' soccer teams have performed consistently well in the annual state tournament. The year 2014 was no different. Franklin High School, Socorro High School, El Dorado High School, and Eastwood High School represented El Paso in the 5A tournament. Franklin and Socorro were eliminated in the Bi-District round but El Dorado and Eastwood advanced past the opening round. El Dorado defeated Midland 2-1 to capture a Bi-District title but were eliminated by Martin 3-1 in the Area round. Eastwood was the last El Paso 5A team standing. The Troopers defeated Midland 3-0 in their Bi-District match, beat Lamar 4-0 in the Area contest, defeated Martin 3-1 in the Regional Quarter Finals, and lost to Coppell 3-1 in the Regional Semi-Finals.
The 4A boys also had a successful state tournament. Andress High School reached Regional Finals before losing to eventual 4A state champion Byron Nelson 5-2. Andress had a bye in the Bi-District round and then ran off playoff wins against Hanks High School 3-2 in the Area round, Parkland High School 7-0 in their Sectional match, Amarillo Caprock 2-0 in the Regional Quarter Finals, and Northside High School 2-0 in the Regional Semi-Finals. Bowie High School had a bye in the Bi-District round and then defeated Riverside High School 2-0 in their Area match, beat Austin High School 1-0 in the Sectional round, and lost to Amarillo High School 2-1 in the Regional Quarter Finals. Other 4A representatives in the state tournament were Parkland High School, Eastlake High School, Irvin High School, Hanks High School, San Elizario High School, Del Valle High School, Austin High School, Horizon High School, and Riverside High School. Parkland defeated Eastlake 2-1 in the Bi-District round and Irvin 2-1 in the Area round before losing to Andress in the Sectionals. Hanks defeated San Elizario 2-1 in their Bi-District match before losing to Andress in the Area round. Del Valle defeated Canutillo 2-1 in the Bi-District round before losing to Austin 1-0 in the Area round. Riverside defeated Horizon 1-0 in the Bi-District round before losing to Bowie 2-0 in their Area match up.
Girls' Soccer
El Paso girls have not performed very well in the annual soccer tournament playoffs although two teams, Montwood High School and Chapin High School, advanced to the Final 16 teams in 2012. The UIL records may not be complete but I can't find any other playoff runs by El Paso teams before the 1998 tournament when Franklin High School made it to Regional Semi-Final round. El Paso teams did fairly well in the 1990's before the playoff drought began in 1999. Franklin High School finished in the Final 4 in the 1996 season making it the only El Paso team in to reach Austin, Texas to compete for the championship trophy. Franklin High School and Coronado High School have each reached the Elite 8 round. Coronado High School has advanced to the Final 16 round three times while Montwood High School, Chapin High School, Franklin High School, Andress High School, and El Paso High School have all reached this stage once. The UIL website, uiltexas.org, only has records for the Final 4 teams from the 1984 season up to the 1989 season. Teams from El Paso didn't reach the Final 4 in those years.
The Only Team to Reach the Final 4
1996 Franklin High School: The Lady Cougars are the only team to make the trip to Austin, Texas to compete for a state championship. Franklin was defeated by Dallas Highland Park 4-0 in the State Semi Finals ending their playoff run. Dallas Highland Park defeated Austin Westlake 2-0 to win the state championship. Franklin's road to the Final 4 included the following matches: Bi-District: bye; Area: defeated Lubbock Coronado 3-1; Sectionals: defeated Coronado High School (El Paso) 5-0; Regional Quarter Round: defeated Abilene Cooper 3-2; Regional Semi-Finals: defeated Allen 3-1; Regional Finals: defeated Arlington Lamar 2-1; and State Semi-Finals: lost to Dallas Highland Park 4-0.
The Teams That Reached the Final 8
1993 Coronado High School: The Lady Thunderbirds have probably done better in the state playoffs than the rest of the El Paso teams not counting Franklin's Final 4 appearance. The T-Birds have an Elite 8 finish and three Final 16 performances. Coronado's playoff matches in 1996 included the following games: Bi-District: bye; Area: defeated Amarillo 8-0; Regional Qualifier: defeated Eastwood (El Paso) 4-1; Regional Quarter Round: defeated Wichita Falls Rider 2-1; Regional Semi-Final: defeated Arlington Lamar 2-0; and Regional Finals: lost to Arlington Martin 1-0.
1997 Franklin High School: The Lady Cougars followed their 1996 Final 4 finish with another strong campaign in 1997. I don't pretend to know why El Paso girls' teams have not done better in the state playoffs, considering that their male counterparts have had a rich tradition the past thirty years. I am not a soccer expert. Only the coaches in El Paso can answer the question. Maybe there is hope for the future since two teams made a playoff run in 2012. Let's hope so.
2014 Girls Soccer Update
Girls' soccer continued its trend of not performing well in the state tournament. All the El Paso 5A representatives were defeated in their Bi-District matches. Socorro High School was defeated by Odessa High School 4-0, Montwood High School lost to Permian 4-0, Franklin High School lost to San Angelo Central 2-1 and Coronado High School lost to Midland High School 2-1. The girls of 4A did a little better in the playoffs with Irvin High School and Chapin High School reaching the Regional Quarter Finals. The Bi-District round saw Eastlake High School defeat Ysleta High School 8-0, San Elizario High School beat Hanks High School 1-0, Del Valle High School beat Horizon High School 3-1, Canutillo High School defeated Parkland High School 4-1, and Jefferson, Irvin, Andress, and Chapin all received byes to the next round. The Area round saw Eastlake defeat Jefferson 2-1, Irvin beat San Elizario 1-0, Andress defeated Del Valle 4-0, and Chapin defeated Canutillo 2-1. The Sectional round featured Irvin defeating Eastlake 3-1 and Chapin beating Andress 2-1. The run of the El Paso 4A teams ended in the Regional Quarter Finals where Canyon Randall defeated Irvin 4-0 and Chapin lost to Lubbock Monterey 3-1.
TAPPS and Private Schools Soccer History
Two other El Paso high schools that compete in TAPPS have done very well in soccer in the 2000's. Those schools are Cathedral High School and Lydia Patterson Institute. TAPPS offers a Fall Soccer Championship and a Winter Soccer Championship. Cathedral has won two state championship while Lydia Patterson has won four state titles. Cathedral has also finished in the Final 4 six times while Lydia Patterson has finished runner-up three times and in the Final 4 once. The years and the finishes are listed below:
El Paso Faith Christian competes in TCAL 3A Division I and has won state titles in both 2012 and 2013.
2015 Update
Cathedral defeated Houston Awty 3-1 on Saturday, February 28 th to capture the TAPPS Division I Soccer Winter State Championship. It was Cathedral's second state title and the first since the Irish won the 2002 TAPPS Division I Soccer Fall Championship. Cathedral defeated John Paul II High School 1-0 in the semi-finals in order to reach the title match. Coach Stephen Lucy said that this championship was three years in the making. Cathedral's playoff run began with victories over Fort Worth Nolan 1-0, Houston St. Pius X 3-1, and Plano's John Paul II 1-0. The championship match was a hard fought battle against Houston Awty. The Irish trailed at halftime 1-0 and Coach Lucy decided to change his team's defensive scheme. The change worked as Cathedral shut out Awty in the second half. Victor Diaz tied the match in the 47th minute. Diaz had scored 28 goals during the season. Mario Ramirez scored the game winning goal in the 67 th minute and the added an insurance goal in the 72 nd minute making the final score 3-1. Other key performers for the Irish were Matthew Hallmark, Andres Bustamante, and Pablo Munoz.
