‘Just a great person’: Former El Paso DJ dies in motorcycle accident
EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso radio fans and DJs are mourning the death of former KLAQ DJ Courtney Nelson.
Nelson died after a motorcycle accident in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday Dec. 14.
Nelson worked at KLAQ and KSII between the mid-1980s until 2012. He left El Paso after 25 years to work at Y100 FM in San Antonio.
Many El Pasoans remember Nelson from his a morning show at KLAQ with "Big" Al Jones who died last year. Over the course of his career, Nelson was also a production director, operations manager, program director for KSII and KLAQ.
"He did anything and everything pretty much a jack of all trades and a master of everyone of them," said Glenn Garza, assistant program/music director at KLAQ.
Former colleagues described Nelson as an avid motocross racer, amazing DJ, and more importantly a great person.
"He was a genius in the production room," Garza said. "He was great on air, had a heart of gold, he looked after all of us. As far as his legacy in the building, it lives today. He taught me, he taught a lot of the others. We're still here and we're teaching...the lessons that we learned from him."
Nelson was 59-years-old.
