Welcome to the sun city Robinson Canó – 2009 World Series Champion signed by Padres

EL PASO, Texas - The San Diego Padres signed Robinson Canó to a minor league contract and assigned him to El Paso, which means 2009 World Series Champion will play some ball at Southwest University Park.

This comes a week after Canó was released by the Padres following a poor 12-game stretch. The Padres had reportedly asked Canó to go to the minors, but he chose to instead try free agency.

Canó was available to pinch hit in Friday's game but didn't take the diamond, sources tell ABC-7 he is expected to play in the Chihuahuas game Saturday where he will most likely play as DH.

No Canó, no worries for the dogs as they secured a 3-2 walk-off win off the bat of Kyle Martin in the first game of the series against the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Second game of the Chihuahuas vs. Isotopes series Saturday at 6.35 p.m. at Southwest University Park.
