Borderland pet owners urged to keep their pets safe this 4th of July
EL PASO, Texas – Pet owners across the Borderland are encouraged to keep their pets safe and bring them indoors this Independence Day.
Each 4th of July holiday, hundreds of pets run away from home.
Officials at Animal Services of El Paso said they receive a high volume of calls regarding pets who escaped as a result of the fireworks.
Animal Services encourages keeping pets safe by resisting the urge of taking them to fireworks displays and events.
They also suggest keeping pets indoors and closing curtains.
Turning on the radio or television could help mask loud, outdoor noises.
Owners are also encouraged to keep a well-fitting collar and identification tag on their pets.
If your pet is crate-trained, place them in their crate.
Ensure your pet is microchipped and that their microchip is updated with the correct information.
Before taking pets to the Animal Services shelter, help reunite the lost animals with their families first.
The shelter remains at full and critical capacity.
