As migrant surge swells, one Las Cruces shelter may close due to funding
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico- The El Calvario United Methodist Church in Las Cruces may have to shut down its shelter.
El Calvario has been aiding migrants and the homeless for almost a decade with blankets, clothing, food and a warm place to sleep.
With more migrants coming into the Borderland daily, Susana Torres, the shelter director, worries about where they will sleep during the cold temperatures.
"Unfortunately, if we do not get any funding, we will be closing our doors by the end of December,” Torres said.
Torres said they appreciate the donations of food and warm clothing, but without federal money or large monetary donations, they will be forced to end their program.
