NYC will spend $4.3 Billion on Asylum Seekers

NEW YORK CITY, New York (KVIA) -- New York City is highlighting the financial strain the migrant situation is placing on its budget.

A deputy mayor says the city will have spent more than $4.3 billion on asylum seeker care by July 2024, and that may be a conservative estimate.

The city continues to see a significant increase in the number of people coming there on a daily basis.

New York has been forced to open up additional emergency respite sites and move migrants into more counties upstate as part of its voluntary program.

Officials say they don't see an end in sight.

More than 70,000 migrants have passed through New York City's intake facilities, and the city is still caring for nearly 45,000 of them.

New York officials call it a crisis and have been asking for the federal government's help in caring for the influx of migrants.
