Las Cruces Memorial Day candlelight ceremony at Veterans Park

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) - This Memorial Day, Las Cruces will pay a solemn tribute to fallen soldiers with a poignant Candlelight Ceremony at Veterans Park. Organized by the Mesilla Valley Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the event aims to honor 204 local veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Dolores Archuleta, a tireless advocate for local veterans, shared that each name listed on the Veterans Park wall represents a soldier who was killed in action. In a symbolic gesture to remember and honor these heroes, a candle will be lit for each of the veterans and will be left to flicker overnight.

The Memorial Day Candlelight Ceremony will commence on Monday, May 29. Families of the veterans and volunteers participating in the event are asked to arrive by 7 p.m. The official ceremony will begin promptly at 8 p.m.

Veterans Park, a place of contemplation and honor, is located at 1251 N. Roadrunner Pkwy. in Las Cruces. For years, it has been a gathering place for community members to remember and celebrate the lives of those who served our country bravely.

As the sun sets on this Memorial Day, the park will be bathed in the gentle glow of candlelight – a serene reminder of the brave men and women who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice. The community is invited to join in this special event, offering a moment to reflect, remember, and honor our fallen heroes.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, Mesilla Valley Chapter, a non-profit organization, is committed to providing support and recognition for combat-wounded veterans. This event is one of their many initiatives that keep the spirit of these heroes alive in our community.

The solemn occasion promises to be a poignant remembrance, reminding us all of the true cost of freedom and the bravery of those willing to pay that price.
