First public Montessori school for El Paso ISD

EPISD

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Montessori is a method of education based on child-led activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play.

More than 80 children throughout El Paso County were randomly selected to enroll in the Montessori program. The program is free county-wide for children ages 3 to 6 years old.

Children are encouraged to focus on activities they’re interested in. This is the opposite of traditional schools, where students generally move through a structured and scheduled curriculum.

Public Montessori students are taught the same grade-level standards as those in a traditional public school classroom. According to the center's data, the majority of the schools are private as Just a fifth of the country’s Montessori schools are public.

El Paso ISD is the second to offer a public Montessori option in the county. Canutillo ISD was the first school district to open a public Montessori last year.
