EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A driver was killed Thursday morning after he crashed a City of El Paso Streets and Maintenance Department truck into a median along the Border Highway near U.S. 54.

Police later identified the victim of the 6:10 a.m. wreck as 44-year-old Federico Flores, a city employee.

A police report indicated that Flores was driving the truck south on U.S. 54 when he "merged onto Loop 375, veered across the lanes and struck the center median." He died at the scene, authorities said.

It was not immediately known what caused Flores to go across lanes and crash the truck.

His death marked the 19th traffic fatality of the year in El Paso, compared to 13 at this same time last year, according to police data.

All eastbound traffic was blocked off on the Border Highway near U.S. 54 for much of the morning as police investigated the crash. You can track traffic delays anytime 24/7 at KVIA.com/Traffic.
