Injured hiker rescued in Franklin Mountains cited for not paying park fee

UPDATE, Nov. 29: Authorities said Monday that a hiker who had to be rescued over the weekend in the Franklin Mountains received a citation from State Park Police for not paying the park fee.

The 21-year-old northeast El Paso man, whose name wasn't released, stepped on a loose rock near the Mammoth Trunk Trail, fell, and dislocated his knee.

"The hiker was located at the ridge line of the Ron Coleman trail where the El Paso Police Department’s Combined Search and Rescue Unit (COMSAR) placed the hiker in a Stokes basket and transported him down the trail," a police incident report said.

The hiker was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Nov. 28: EL PASO, Texas — Rescue crews were trying to get an injured hiker off the mountain late Sunday afternoon.

The rescue effort was taking place near the summit on the west side of Transmountain.

Authorities said a man in his 20s suffered a leg injury.

The call for help came in about 3 p.m.

No further details were immediately available.
