Fort Bliss soldier deployed in effort to defeat ISIS dies in Middle East
FORT BLISS, Texas -- A soldier stationed out of Fort Bliss has died on duty in the Middle East as part of the operation to defeat ISIS, the Pentagon said Wednesday.
The death of Spc. Nick Bravo Regules, 20, came in what was described as a "non-combat-related incident" in Jordan while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.
That operation is the U.S. Central Command's name for the military effort to fight Islamic State terrorists in Iraq and Syria.
The deadly incident involving Regules - which happened on Tuesday - was under investigation, the military said in a statement.
The coronavirus was not suspected in Regules' death, according to the military newspaper Stars & Stripes.
Regules is a Florida native, officials said, who was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment. It is Patriot missile battalion that operates air defense systems to protect U.S. troops and their allies from missile or airborne attacks.
The Fort Bliss unit had deployed in January to the Middle East. A photo posted by the Army shows the battalion “casing its colors” during a ceremony prior to deployment.
It was not immediately clear where in Jordan the unit was assigned.
