ABC-7 Xtra: Contracts, Vetoes and the City Manager salary at the center of controversy
EL PASO, Texas -- A job opportunity in Frisco, Texas, set off a series of shockwaves that have reached El Paso government.
El Paso City Manager Tommy Gonzalez was named as one of four finalists for the position, which meant a potential vacancy in El Paso.
Gonzalez's contract wasn't up until 2024. But that wouldn't stop City Council from finding ways to get Gonzalez to stay in the Sun City.
Two special meetings and two mayoral vetoes later, Gonzalez appears set to remain in El Paso for the foreseeable future. But the entire ordeal exposed rifts in the city's leadership.
ABC-7 Xtra speaks to two former mayors about moving from a strong-mayor government to a city-manager form of government, the power struggle that erupted from this recent ordeal and whether having a city manager is in the best interest of El Paso.
