El Paso Mayor says migrants are no longer on the streets of Downtown
EL PASO, Texas– In an interview with Jonathan Karl in ABC’s This Week, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said the number of migrants coming to the Borderland has been continuously increasing.
However, he said, migrants are no longer on the streets.
He said Friday the city encountered nearly 2,000 migrants on one day, 80 percent of which are coming from Venezuela.
He said the big difference they are now seeing is that 50 percent of the migrants coming today do not have a sponsor or money to go elsewhere.
Leeser said in the last few days they have not had any people released into the streets of El Paso.
He said the city’s goal is to never drop any migrants off on the streets and to make sure nobody is homeless.
“The people are not coming to El Paso, they are coming to America,” said Leeser.
He said the city will continue to work and make sure they find them a place to stay.
ABC-7 has been to Downtown El Paso where migrants are sitting outside the Greyhound Bus Terminal.
