Exhibit honors women in the military

BREVARD, N.C. (WLOS ) — The father of an Army captain is putting the spotlight on women in the military … past and present.
Emmett Casciato, curator of the Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas, has a daughter who was appointed to West Point Army Academy and then served five years with the Army as a captain. For one of those five years, Abby Casciato was deployed to Afghanistan.
During the last three years, Casciato collected women’s uniforms dating to World War II and turned the Brevard museum’s conference room into a new exhibit featuring those uniforms.
Casciato put out a call to the community to send 8×10 photos of loved ones who served so he could include them in the exhibit. The result was 30-foot wall covered in pictures of women from all branches of the military and all time periods dating to World War I.
Also included in this exhibit will be three lectures by the following women:
Nov. 7: U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.) Maureen Copelof: “History of Women in the Military”
Nov. 14: U.S. Navy Medical Officer Recruiter Lt. Barbara Sterrenberg, Knoxville, Tennessee:, “My Career in the Navy”
Nov. 21: U.S. Army Nurse, WWII, Dorothy Managan: “Taking Care of POWs from the Pacific in 1945”
The exhibit is open through November.
