The next great QB? 10-year-old Johnny Fajardo is turning heads everywhere

EL PASO, Texas - What do NFL Stars Aaron Jones, Von Miller, and Dak Prescott have in common?

Easy. They all follow Johnny Fajardo on social media.

Fajardo has scouts salivating for the high school class of 2029 and after leading his El Paso Youth football team to a national runner up finish, his social media account is flooding with activity.

“They ask me what I do to get better at football," says Fajardo of his messages. "And I tell them I work out a lot.”

It's a natural answer for a 10-year-old kid. After all, Johnny's highlight tape is tantalizing for his age.

Johnny trains under the watchful eye of 31-year El Paso coaching veteran Chuck Veliz, who spent two years as an offensive assistant to Sean Kugler at UTEP.

“He’s smart as any 18, 19-year-old out there because he’s football smart," says Veliz of Johnny. "And that’s what’s going to help him, that’ll separate him."

"There’s going to be kids just as good as he is. But the older he gets, the more football knowledge he has. He’s going to be an outstanding young man.”

Johnny has his sights on one goal.

"I want to improve and to be the best," says Johnny, who is currently in the 4th grade.

He's caught the attention of Prescott, Qb for the Dallas Cowboys, and Miller, edge rusher for Denver Broncos, who have both reached out to him on social media in support.

But despite all his early social media traction, Veliz is careful not to put too much pressure on young Johnny.

“Potential is a tough word because it can put pressure on kids," says Veliz, who since retiring from coaching on the sideline has started his own offensive skill player academy. "And that’s what I like to tell these kids we’re gonna have fun doing it."

Coach Veliz says eventually, he will ramp up the training as Johnny gets older.

"The older that he gets, I'm going to start instilling more coverage reads, different aspects of the game like that. But right now. but right now, it's just a lot of ball mechanics."

"He's as good at his age, as any kid I've had at any age and that goes all the way to the college kids."

Johnny idolizes both Prescott and former Texas and current Indianapolis Colts QB Sam Ehlinger. And though while just a kid for now, don't be shocked if he makes a name for himself down the road.
