Wrong-way driver suspected of being drunk collides with police officer on I-10 in west El Paso
EL PASO, Texas -- Interstate 10 was shut down in both directions through west El Paso late Friday night after a wrong-way driver suspected of being drunk collided with another car driven by a police officer, authorities told ABC-7.
Police said a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes crashed into the officer's vehicle. It was reported just after 11 p.m.
The officer was alright, a police spokesman said, but was going to the hospital to be checked out as a precaution.
The other driver refused medical treatment, police said. An ABC-7 crew at the scene observed the man being given a field sobriety test; he was then taken into police custody and placed under arrest.
The westbound interstate was closed at Redd Road, while eastbound traffic was being diverted off at Artcraft Road. Authorities said they expected traffic investigators to be examining the crash scene into the early morning hours.
