ABC-7 Xtra: What will face mask policies be in El Paso moving forward?
EL PASO, Texas -- Now that the CDC says fully vaccinated people can remove their masks both indoors and outdoors, state and local governments are weighing in. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says municipalities cannot force you to wear a mask or they could face fines if they do. But El Paso's mayor and county judge are asking El Pasoans to still mask up until we reach herd immunity.
"We need to show our community that we want our neighbors to the south to be coming here as soon as possible. When we talk about normalcy, its not gonna be normal until we have a relationship with Juarez and Chihuahua the way we had it before. So herd immunity is not here. Herd immunity is what happens between us when we have that relationship between each other," said Mayor Oscal Leeser.
"And we want to make sure that we don't have a spike, and that's why we're here, to encourage you and everyone else out there, to continue to wear a mask, continue social distancing, and wash and clean you hands - because it does worry us that we're not at herd immunity today," said County Judge Ricardo Samaniego.
