Your Voice, Your Vote: Candidates for El Paso County Sheriff face off in debate

Your Voice, Your Vote: We're highlighting the race for El Paso County Sheriff with a debate in the ABC-7 studios.

Three of the four Democratic candidates vying for the position joined ABC-7: current El Paso Police Sergeant Ron Martin, Canutillo ISD Police Chief Carlos Carrillo and Raul Mendiola who works in security for the Ysleta school district.

Also on the ballot is the incumbent Sheriff Richard Wiles who declined to participated in the debate.

Wiles said in a statement, "I apologize for not being at the debate, but I believe the citizens of El Paso understand my position on the many important issues that you will discuss and my many accomplishments as Chief of Police and Sheriff speak for themselves."

There are no Republicans in the race, so the winner of the Democratic party race will become the new Sheriff.

A reminder, early voting is already underway until Feb. 28. The primary is march 3rd.
