61-year-old woman in crosswalk struck, killed by turning pickup truck in east El Paso
EL PASO, Texas -- A 61-year-old pedestrian was struck by an industrial pickup truck and killed at an east El Paso intersection late Wednesday night.
The deadly incident occurred about 10 p.m. at Pellicano and Bob Hope.
Police on Thursday identified the victim as Julie Minchey of El Paso. Her death was the city's eighth traffic fatality of the year, which police said doubles the death toll from a year ago at this time.
An eyewitness told ABC-7 that the woman was hit by a white Ford F-250 truck while crossing the street. An ABC-7 photojournalist at the scene observed the truck, which had a logo on the door for a local mechanical firm and carried ladders and other work materials.
Investigators on Thursday confirmed that Minchey was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection when she was hit by the turning pickup. She was rushed to the hospital, but police said she died a short time later.
An ABC-7 crew at the scene overheard the driver saying he didn't see the woman because she was wearing dark clothing. Police confirmed that the man "failed to see Minchey in the crosswalk as he proceeded to make the turn."
Investigators have not said who was at fault or whether the pickup driver will face any charges in the incident.
