EP Airport Celebrates Trade Zone’s 25th Anniversary

El PASO, TX — The El Paso International Airport celebrated the 25th anniversary of Foreign Trade Zone number 68 Wednesday.

In 1982, the transfer of the “Grant of Authority” from El Paso Trade Zone Incorporated to the Sun City received approval from the U.S. Foreign Trade Zones.

El paso’s Trade Zone 68 is the largest volume, general purpose foreign trade zone on the U.S./Mexico border. It encompasses 3443 acres.

The airport’s Director of Aviation, Patrick T. Abeln, was on hand to commemorate the zone and its importance toEl Paso.

“For the last 25 years, this has been a real important piece of El Paso commerce. This allows goods to come into the city without a tariff from all over the world. Value-added transactions take place with those goods, and then they can leave the city and move to another country without a tariff,” said Abeln.

Foreign trade zones are designed to helpU.S. companies stay competitive in the global market.
