Ethics complaint filed against El Paso District 3 representative following gas card misuse controversy
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A District 3 resident filed a formal ethics complaint against City Representative Cassandra Hernandez Friday afternoon.
George Zavala claims the city rep. violated the city's ethics ordinance. He wants her to be disciplined.
This comes after ABC-7 obtained a video showing Hernandez's husband pumping gas into a Toyota Tacoma truck on February 10, 2023. A source believes the husband used Hernandez's city-issued gas card to pay for the gas.
A source close to the investigation confirmed the man fueling the gas was Hernandez's husband.
El Paso Police Department records show the representative owns a white minivan and her husband owns the truck.
A person close to the investigation said 17.1 gallons of premium gasoline were pumped at the gas station in the video using Hernandez's city-issued gas card.
According to an internal audit, Hernandez's gas card was used to pump $6,700 of gas in 2022. That's significantly more than most other representatives serving at that time.
On May 9, ABC-7 asked Hernandez if others used her gas card in 2022.
"Yes, I can confidently say I'm the only one who uses it," she told ABC-7.
On Thursday ABC-7 asked the Hernandez if she is still confident in her previous answer.
"I really appreciate you being here and like I said I am not going to be answering any questions, but thank you for being here and if my constituents for me I am happy to answer their questions and have a conversation with them," responded Hernandez.
