La Union Maze open until Nov. 7 pays tribute to health workers

LA UNION, New Mexico -- Each year the La Union Corn Maze changes the design of the maze and this year was no exception.

This year’s design is a tribute to the healthcare workers who stood at the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The La Union Corn Maze will be open until Nov. 7, with directions and ticket information available by clicking here.

Karoline Sondgeroth, manager of the La Union Corn Maze, said they decided to honor healthcare workers in the maze’s design because they wanted to recognize those who have been working tirelessly the past year.

“We just wanted to give a huge shoutout to our healthcare workers they have been working tirelessly the past couple of years and we wanted to say thank you for the work that they have done,” she said.

Sondgeroth indicated that the design has been received very well by the community.

“We have received a lot of messages, kind messages saying that they appreciate it and that they feel acknowledged during this time. We are glad to have done that for them,” Sondgeroth said.

Visitors are also taking notice of the new design- especially healthcare workers who visit.

“I was excited as soon as he told me. I got really happy for people that are working in the healthcare system and are in need of a little boost,” Ingrid Peart said.

Quinn Gunderman, a healthcare worker herself, said that she was touched seeing the design.

“It makes me feel humbled and very blessed that there are people out there that are appreciating us,” she said.

Juan Barrientos is also a healthcare worker- and he feels appreciated.

‘I feel honored that you know that they dedicated to us. You know last year was a tough year for all of us- the whole community. But I appreciate them doing this,” Barrientos said.

Last year, the corn maze was forced to get creative and only have a drive-thru pumpkin patch due to the pandemic.

Sondgeroth also said they were financially impacted last year. She explained that each season they hire between 70 to 100 employees, but that was not possible last year.

She said that so far the maze has been doing very well this season.
