KANSAS CITY, MO (KSHB) — The connection between a homicide in Overland Park, Kansas, and a suicide in Kearney, Missouri, became more clear Tuesday after an attorney for the homicide victim provided details about a custody battle.

David Flick, 59, was shot and killed as he stepped out of his car in the parking lot of his business.

Police identified a vehicle of interest, which Clay County sheriff’s deputies later spotted in Kearney.

The deputies, assisted by Kearney police officers, initiated a traffic stop, and as they approached the SUV, heard a single gunshot.

The officers found a man, who Overland Park police confirmed was the suspect in Flick’s homicide, dead inside the car.

That man has been identified as 60-year-old Scott MacDonald.

MacDonald was 40-year-old Samantha Andrada’s boyfriend, according to Flick’s attorney, Katie McClaflin.

Andrada was in a years-long custody battle with Flick.

Flick first filed custody action in 2013, McClaflin said, and won sole custody of the child in 2014.

Early in 2017, Andrada returned to the Kansas City area after leaving for a few years, and filed a motion to modify the custody arrangement.

According to McClaflin, the case was set to go to trial before Flick and Andrada reached an agreement earlier this month.

The attorneys were working to finalize the paperwork before the homicide and suicide Monday.

McClaflin told 41 Action news MacDonald “had been a key figure in the ongoing conflict between the parties.”

She also issued this statement about Flick:

David was a loving and devoted father to his two young sons. He spent the last several years working and fighting to give them the best lives possible. It is a devastating tragedy for these two little boys to lose the father they have lived with their entire lives. Due to the senseless violence that occurred yesterday, their lives will never be the same. We genuinely hope law enforcement will continue to pursue justice for David.

Terra Technologies President John Kahl also issued a statement Tuesday, offering thanks for the “outpouring of support and sympathy” following Flick’s death.

“Above all, our thoughts go out to the Flick family and to all the friends whose lives David made better,” Kahl stated. “We remain committed to David’s legacy of land conservation, hard work, and service to our clients, and we will continue to honor those principles moving forward.”

One of Flick’s colleagues at Terra Technologies, Shane Staten, released a statement as well:

David was an incredible businessman, conservationist, teacher and friend. He was one of the smartest people I have ever known and was always quick with a joke and a smile. David had an extremely big heart, and I have seen him go out of his way to help others numerous times over the years. He was a major influence on the person I am today, and I can never forget him. Our thoughts go out to his family and to everyone else he touched.

Overland Park police are looking to speak with Andrada.

She is not a suspect, police said, but detectives would still like to talk to her about the homicide and suicide.
