UTEP rifle head coach Andrea Palafox sets Mexican record at ISSF World Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - UTEP Rifle Head Coach Andrea Palafox placed 36th overall at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup while setting a Mexican Record of 586 in the 50m Rifle event in the first stage.
The previous Mexican record of 581 was also held by Palafox.
“It was a challenging event because of the heat and humidity, but there were amazing performances by many competitors,” Palafox said. “I was very pleased to be able to be there and do some good work. It was an important event for me because I am preparing for the Pan American Games where I have a chance to earn an Olympic quota for Paris 2024.”
In the elimination round of the 50m Rifle 3 positions event, Palafox placed fifth in the first relay, recording a 586-27x score: 199 kneeling, 198 prone, 189 standing.
In the qualifications round, Palafox shot 581-24x: 193 kneeling, 196 prone, 192 standing.
She essentially tied with five other shooters recording 581.
The differential comes from the X-count.
Shooting, governed by the ISSF, has high-profile international competitions like the ISSF World Championships and is also one of the most competitive sports at the Olympic Games.
The ISSF World Cup counts among the most prestigious international events in shooting.
Palafox will compete in the 2023 XIX Pan American Games from Oct. 20 – Nov. 5th in Santiago, Chile at the Polígono de tiro de Pudahuel.
