‘I thought I was going to die’: El Pasoan recalls being hit by car at bus stop, losing leg

EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso man who lost his leg after he was hit by car while sitting at a bus stop along an east side street last month faces a long road ahead for rehabilitation.

Guillermo "Willie" Guzman, 64, was sitting at a bus stop near the 11100 block of Montwood Drive on May 5 when a car lost control on a curve in the road and hit him before striking a power pole and then rolling over, police said.

"I thought I was going to die," Guzman told ABC-7 as he recounted the order in an interview Tuesday.

Guzman's leg was amputated when he got to the hospital.

"I never thought something like this would happen to me," Guzman said, adding that his life has changed forever.

Police identified the driver of the car that struck him as 26-year-old Aaron Corey Ruiz. There was also a 5-year-old in the car at the time of the crash, but both Ruiz and the child escaped with minor injuries, police said.

Ruiz was initially arrested on charges of accident involving damage to a vehicle and failure to identify; he was later released on $6,000 bond. Police have previously said that additional charges are pending.

Guzman said he would like to be fitted for a prosthetic leg. A family friend set up a Go Fund Me in his name to help him through this financially.
