‘Cowboys for Trump’ founder won’t resign as Otero commissioner over ‘dead Democrat’ comment
ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico — The founder of a group called "Cowboys for Trump" who also serves as an Otero County commissioner is rejecting calls to resign after he metaphorically said "the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat."
A video posted online earlier this week shows Republican Couy Griffin saying he wants Democrats to die politically, not physically. He claims the party is anti-American and opposed to President Donald Trump.
New Mexico state Democratic chairwoman Marg Elliston said Griffin's comments had no place in the state's political discourse and had called for him to resign.
But Griffin told ABC-7 on Friday that he would not resign because he did nothing wrong.
"If their demand was warranted, then I would consider it. But their demand for me to step down because of that instance in which I said 'the only good Democrat is a dead democrat' when I was talking about politics to begin with -- I believe it's unwarranted," he said in an interview.
