Texas State Guard soldiers help process migrants before they are bused to Chicago

EL PASO, Texas– Migrants being bused to cities around the nation from El Paso continued Monday with a bus heading to Chicago this afternoon.

According to Deputy Director of the Opportunity Center John Martin a bus is set to depart at 4 p.m.

In partnership with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the Opportunity Center is assisting in temporary housing and feeding migrants who come to El Paso.

Martin said the organization is taking in about 50 migrants per day, and the turnaround time is usually within a day, to give them time to arrange travel to another destination.

Along with help from the OEM, the center is now also receiving help from the Texas Division of Emergency Management and members of the Texas State Guard, who are helping with paperwork as asylum seekers register.

Martin said they would evaluate in two weeks to see if they continue taking in migrants.

ABC-7 reached out to the City about what is expected this week.

Deputy City Manager, Mario D’Agostino, confirms in a statement to ABC-7 that the City/OEM is working with the State of Texas to help augment the City/OEM’s efforts to provide transportation of the migrants who do not have sponsors.

He added the City/OEM provides care packages and coordinates with officials and NGOs to receive them regardless of who is transporting.

"OEM and the City will continue to coordinate support as we have always done in current and previous migrant crises situations to prevent releases to the street," said D’Agostino.

ABC-7 also reached out the Ruben Garcia, Director of the Annunciation House, a network of migrant shelters, who said they are also seeing an increase at their hospitality sites.

Garcia said Monday Border Patrol and ICE released 532 refugees to them.
