Shocking video shows plane skid across runway without landing gear
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — There were some scary moments Thursday for a pilot trying to land a small plane at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Video shows the Cessna plane coming in for a landing, but instead skidding across a runway -- without wheels or any landing gear.
Sparks flew from the friction like fireworks and people out working at nearby aircraft hangars were stunned, WESH-TV reported.
"All of a sudden I heard the scrape and I look over and see the jet scraping across the runway," said witness Dethel Mateo. "Kind of surreal, you know."
As the cleanup began on the runway, relief set in knowing the two people on board were not hurt.
“It's a relief they're doing all right. The airplane is in bad shape, but that can be fixed," said Mateo.
The cleanup did put a stop to air traffic as several commercial flights were diverted and canceled between American and Delta airlines.
There was no word on what caused the landing gear problems.
