ANN ARBOR, MI (WXYZ) — A new beauty school now open inside Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall is teaching future hair stylists how to work on all hair types.

Aisha Gatlin is the owner of Beautiful Luxe Hair Salon located in Ann Arbor. She says she was constantly having to train new employees how to work on textured hair on African American women.

“If you have hair on your head, a stylist should be able to accommodate you,” said Gatlin.

To better train stylists, Gatlin opened Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology. The goal is to teach other stylists how to work on textured hair and embrace natural curls.

“There are a lot of African American women in this community, and it is only fair that they’re able to get their hair done as well,” said 16-year-old Micaela Thomas of Ypsilanti, who goes to Beautiful Luxe Hair Salon.

Right now, the school has seven students, but the space is big enough to fill 20 spots for day and night classes. Gatlin will also be offering continued education courses.

For stylists interested in taking classes through the school, you can reach out to Gatlin through the Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology website.
