Driver killed in east El Paso pickup crash may have used drugs
UPDATE, June 17: A driver who died after crashing his pickup truck into an electrical pole at the intersection of George Dieter and Pebble Hills on Wednesday may have been under the influence of drugs at the time, El Paso police said Thursday.
"Due to the discovery of a narcotic and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle, investigators are awaiting autopsy results for a determination as to the cause of death," police said in a statement.
The man, whose identity wasn't released, died at a local hospital after being rushed there following the crash.
ORIGINAL REPORT, June 16: EL PASO, Texas -- A motorist died after their pickup truck crashed into an electric poll at a busy east El Paso intersection on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash at George Dieter Drive and Pebble Hills Boulevard happened about 2 p.m.
First-responders said the crash victim had no pulse at the scene and was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local hospital.
Police initially said the crash also caused a power outage for some homes and businesses in the area, but a spokesman for El Paso Electric later indicated that no outages had occurred as a result of the crash.
The crash did cause the the traffic lights to go out at the intersection.
There was no immediate word on what triggered the crash.
