Drunk driving, speeding blamed in deadly east El Paso rock wall crash
UPDATE: EL PASO, Texas — A 32-year-old woman from Juarez was killed in Monday morning's crash of an SUV into a rock wall in east El Paso, police announced Monday afternoon.
Investigators said she was a passenger in the SUV driven by a 42-year-old Horizon City man who was allegedly driving drunk and speeding; authorities said criminal charges were pending.
That driver was injured and hospitalized following the crash in the 11200 block of Vista Del Sol around 1:45 a.m.
Names of the driver and passenger were not released by police due to the on-going investigation.
According to a police incident report, the SUV was speeding when "the driver lost control of the car and veered off the roadway hitting the curb, a fire hydrant, and a rock wall" before the vehicle burst into flames.
This case marks the 51st El Paso traffic death so far this year, compared with 55 at this time a year ago, according to EPPD data.
ORIGINAL REPORT: EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations unit responded to a deadly crash early Monday morning.
It happened just after 2 a.m. in the 11300 block of Vista Del Sol Drive.
Police said one person was killed and another was seriously hurt in the single-vehicle crash. Police have not yet said what may have caused the crash, but video from the scene shows an SUV crashed into the rock wall of a home.
Investigators remained on scene for hours examining the crash scene.
