Chapin’s standout Jayden Leverett commits to Vanderbilt

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The 6'11 standout for the Chapin Huskies revealed his final college decision to become a Commodore at Chapin High School gymnasium in front of friends and family on Saturday, October 19th.

Leverett had narrowed his decision down to four schools which included Vanderbilt, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma. He ultimately felt Vanderbilt would be the best choice athletically and most important to him was the academics.

"This is a big moment for me in my life," Leverett said. "I liked the coaching staff, how they treated me and their style of play. They play their bigs' a lot so that was important to me. Also, I want to be an engineer and Vanderbilt is a very prestigious school so after I graduate I'll be able to get a job wherever I want."

Vanderbilt's men's basketball program is entering a new era as they added a new coaching staff. In March, Mark Byington was named the Commodores new head basketball coach after leading James Madison to 32 victories and its first NCAA championship win since 1983.

Leverett still has one more season with the Huskies and has one last goal he wants to accomplish with his team before heading to Vanderbilt.

"Even though I'm going to Vanderbilt now I'm not going to be cocky," Leverett said. "I'm still going to be in the gym working out, getting faster, stronger and getting better. I want to prepare for Vanderbilt but also just be with my teammates, practice with them and have fun with them. I want to win State, that's for sure."
