========================================
El Paso high schools and El Paso individuals can't compete with the rest of Texas in athletics. We certainly can't win a state championship. Why can't El Paso win a state championship? By now, I hope you, the reader, realize that these statements are far from true. El Paso high schools have won state championships, either team or individual, in every sport but volleyball and softball---yes even in football. Perhaps, in the near future, a team from El Paso will win a state championship in volleyball and softball. Bel Air High School came close in softball and Coronado was runner up in volleyball.
The following is a summary of my research for those of you that want a quick reference. I will list the sports that I have written about and the schools that have won championships in those sports. I will list the number of individual state championships for the sports where no team titles have been won or for the sports that have both team and individual champions. I hope you have found my book entertaining and informative. Don't let anyone tell you that El Paso can't win a state championship. Please forgive the double negative. You now have the proof that El Paso can win and has won many state championships. I will use two different sections to summarize the results. One section will cover UIL sanctioned championships and the other section will cover TAPPS, TCIL and any other private and parochial school organizations.

The Final Count
How many state championships have El Paso area high schools won? I have included all types of state championships in my total (team, individual, singles, doubles, relays, etc.) I have included public schools, private schools, and even Fort Hancock. I didn't count Las Cruces or Wink. The grand total is 547 state championships or 542 without Fort Hancock football. The total is 616 state championships if I include the THSCA and TIWA titles for wrestling. The final total is no doubt higher because I haven't been able to include all the individual swimming championships for Cathedral High School during the TCIL era. Now you have the facts and the numbers. Can El Paso win a state championship? The answer is YES!!!!!!!!!
Note: I didn't write about Hockey in this book since the UIL doesn't offer a state championship in that sport. Two El Paso high schools have won state championships in hockey. Coronado High School has won two NMIIHL composite titles while Franklin High School has won one. I didn't include these titles because they are state championships from New Mexico and because the team memberships may not solely consists of students from Coronado or Franklin. Never the less, I'm sure the trophies for these titles can be found in the trophy cases of both schools.
2015 Franklin High School wins the NMIIHL Composite State Championship
2014 Coronado High School wins the NMIIHL Composite State Championship
2013 Coronado High School wins the NMIIHL Composite State Championship
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is not a UIL recognized sport by the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association does hold a state meet every year. Dianeliz Tirado, a junior at Eastwood High School, had quite a weekend from May 1 st -2 nd , 2015 in Garland, Texas. She won a gold medal in the vault scoring 9.925 on the compulsory portion of the event and 9.750 on the optional portion. Tirado also won a bronze medal on the uneven bars and placed 6 th in the All Around competition. Competition at the state meet was not new to Tirado. She won the bronze medal in the vault competition in 2014.
Wrestling Prior to UIL Recognition
The UIL first recognized the sport of wrestling in the 1998-1999 school year and awarded team and individual championships in the spring of 1999. High school wrestling prior to UIL recognition was governed by the Texas High School Coaches Association through 1995 and the Texas Interscholastic Wrestling Association from 1996-1998. The El Paso area had several state team state championships and many individual champions prior to UIL recognition. Burges High School was probably the most successful pre-UIL team in El Paso. Burges won 4 state championships in the 1970's and 1980's. Irvin High School and Eastwood High School also won championships during this era.
Burges High School was coached by the legendary Rick Ortega in the early 1970's. Ortega would later move to Dallas, Texas where he coached at St. Marks for over 30 years before retiring in 2012. Ortega had a coaching career of 42 years with 40 of those years as a head coach. His coaching resume is virtually unmatched in high school wrestling. His teams won 17 state team titles, 657 dual meets, and he coached 67 individual state champions which stands as the third most of any coach in the country. His teams at St. Marks won three straight state titles from 1992 to 1994. Ortega retired in 2012 when he felt that he no longer had the energy to coach any more. He was later diagnosed with liver cancer. His son donated part of his liver to his father and I am happy to report that both father and son are doing well as of this writing.
