Las Cruces nursing facility has 8th virus death; state hits 30,000 cases
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A Las Cruces nursing home resident was among five new coronavirus deaths in New Mexico reported on Friday.
It came on a day where the state reached 30,000 confirmed virus cases with several hundred new infections occurring.
State health officials indicated the fatality toll from Covid-19 reached 57 in Doña Ana County and hit 887 across New Mexico.
The Las Cruces victim, a man in his 90s with underlying conditions, was a resident at the Good Samaritan Society assisted living facility.
It was at least the eighth death to have occurred since late July involving residents at the Good Samaritan Society in Las Cruces, according to state records reviewed by ABC-7.
The seven prior deaths involving residents at the Las Cruces facility include...
- A woman in her 90s with underlying conditions whose death was recorded by the state on Sept. 19.
- A woman in her 70's with underlying conditions whose death was reported on Sept. 3.
- A man in his 70s who was noted in the state's death count on Aug. 25.
- A man in his 90s who had underlying conditions and had his death reported Aug. 18.
- Another man in his 90s who had lived at the facility whose death was recorded on Aug. 14.
- The passing of a women in her 80s was reported on July 31.
- And the first death there was a woman in her 70s who was added to the state's fatality count on July 28.
According to ABC-7 archives, the Good Samaritan Society was placed by health officials on July 4 to a list of dozens of assisted living facilities across New Mexico where case outbreaks were reported among residents and/or staff.
Based on state records, an ABC-7 count over the summer showed Good Samaritan among at least nine nursing homes in Las Cruces - and 10 total in Doña Ana County - where virus infections had occurred.
Meanwhile, there were 45 new virus cases reported in Doña Ana County on Friday, as part of an additional 341 infections throughout New Mexico. The cumulative case counts now totaled 3,521 in Doña Ana County and exactly 30,000 for the state.
